WHAT TO DO WHEN YOUR HAIR JUST WON’T RESPOND

Hello hello guys!

How is everyone holding up? I hope we are all staying safe, strong and at home! Hopefully all this will be over soon.

A few weeks ago, I was trying to do a hairstyle I do all the time and it just came out looking…off! I was confused because I used similar products and a similar technique but my hair just wasn’t responding like it usually does. This isn’t the first time this has happened and I know I’m not the only one who has experienced this. Sometimes your hair just decides to act up on you and you are just lost and confused. Well here are a few things to try if your hair just isn’t responding:

  • Clarify your hair – a lot of the time, when your hair isn’t responding, it’s because you have product build up in your hair. I think we can agree that most of us naturals are heavy handed with products (me included!) and, if you don’t clarify properly, all that product builds up and begins to cause problems. I know a lot of naturals like to co-wash (I did a post on it here) or use cleansing conditioners but sometimes you have to pull out the good old shampoo and give your hair a good wash.
  • You may need a protein treatment – to cut a very long story short, our hair is made of protein and protein gives the hair strength. Sometimes we forget to add that extra step that gives our hair strength and it is so key to maintaining healthy strong hair. Sometimes your hair isn’t responding because it lacks the strength to hold that style. ALWAYS make sure to follow a protein treatment with a moisturising deep conditioner. Read this post I did a while ago on protein treatments for more info!
  • Do a deep moisture treatment – to be very honest, you should be deep conditioning your hair regularly (I recommend every time you wash your hair). But sometimes, your hair isn’t responding because it is just dry and lacks nourishment. If you haven’t done a deep conditioning treatment in a while, I suggest you change that soon! A tell tale sign of needing a moisturising treatment is when you notice a lot of breakage or if your hair just feels drier than normal.
  • You may need a trim – I know we all hate this one but one of the reasons for hair that isn’t responding is often the need for a trim. Sounds strange that needing a trim could compromise your hair but it really can! Ends that need to be trimmed are usually split, dry and extremely frizzy. If you are having trouble smoothing your ends or detangling your hair, split ends are usually the culprit and you’ll most likely need a trim. Go to a trusted hairdresser to get a proper trim.
  • Your products might be expired – this is one that a lot of people overlook or don’t think about but your products might be expired. Yes, hair products DO expire! Pay attention to smell, colour and texture/consistency. If your hair isn’t responding and one of these factors have changed, chances are that the products are expired and you should throw it out! No point wasting your time with products that aren’t working.

There we go guys!! I hope this helps someone out there and helps you solve your problem!

Love,

Tara xXx
