Hi guys!!

How is everyone doing?? I hope everyone is safe and well! It looks like lockdown is easing for a lot of people in a lot of countries – don’t forget to be alert and careful.

I wanted to write about a very important topic: the scalp! Your hair comes from your scalp so HEALTHY SCALP = HEALTHY HAIR. The scalp is an important but often ignored part of the body. If you are having scalp issues, this can impact hair growth negatively. The book, ‘Science of Black Hair‘, states “your scalp should remain clean, toned, pliable and positively stimulated”. This sentence sums it all up. Your scalp should always be clean and nourished – if you focus on these two things, you’re sorted.

Here are some tips to keep your scalp in healthy condition:

  • Keep your scalp clean – I think this one goes without saying! A dirty scalp is not only uncomfortable, it can also physically prevent hair growth. When you have lots of build up on your scalp, your follicles can get blocked up, physically preventing the hairs from coming out of the scalp. Make sure to wash your scalp properly with a good shampoo.
  • Massage your scalp with oils – massaging your scalp is an excellent way to keep your scalp stimulated and to promote hair growth by increasing blood flow to the scalp. When you add oils, that just takes it to the next level because you get several nutrients and benefits from the oils. Our favourite oil for scalp massages is the Nature’s Locks Reparative Hair Growth & Sealing Oil.
  • Avoid using conditioners/deep conditioners on your scalp – conditioners and deep conditioners are not really designed to be on the scalp so, if you do, you might experience itchiness, build up and discomfort.
  • Treat scalp issues as soon as they arise – it is better to tackle the issue as soon as it arises! If you find your scalp is acting out of the ordinary or you notice any issues (e.g. dandruff). do your best to address it as soon as possible to prevent the issue worsening and becoming harder to treat.
  • Be gentle with your scalp – your scalp needs to be treated with care. Don’t forget that your scalp is still skin! You should avoid scratching your scalp excessively, using sharp accessories and using harsh products. Don’t tug and pull at your hair too much to avoid putting pressure on your scalp.
  • Make sure your hairstyles are not too tight – when we talk about traction alopecia (hair loss due to tight styles), most people just think hairline/edges. However, traction alopecia can occur on any part of your scalp. It is so crucial to make sure your styles aren’t too tight – aside from causing scalp tenderness, it can cause hair loss that could potentially be permanent.
  • Be very careful when using relaxers – relaxers are just not great for your scalp so you have to make sure that the person doing your relaxer really knows what they’re doing. So many of us have scalp burns from relaxers that were poorly done. When I used to get relaxers, my scalp was burned so often – I literally used to get scabs on my scalp. I got my last relaxer in 2011 before I went fully natural and, till today, my scalp is still extremely tender and often painful in the areas where I had scabs.

That’s it guys! These are the tips I’ve found to be most useful. If you have other tips, please share!

Love,

Tara xXx
