WASH DAY REGIMEN

Hey guys!

So I figured that I should do a post on my wash day regimen! I do most of these steps once a week in order to maintain healthy hair:
1) Shampoo – I only do this once a MONTH. Before you guys freak out about using shampoo just once a month, the shampoo is used just to get rid of the build up of products on your scalp, meaning that you should just put the shampoo on your scalp. PLEASE DO NOT PUT THE SHAMPOO ALLLLL OVER YOUR HAIR, ESPECIALLY ON YOUR ENDS! This is a surefire way to dry your hair out. Put it on your scalp, wash your scalp thoroughly and, when you rinse, the run off will clean the rest of your hair. And do try to use a sulphate-free shampoo (e.g, Organix, Aubrey Organics), as sulphates dry your hair out. Of course, if you feel your hair is dirty, you are more than welcome to shampoo your hair every week – it is YOUR hair, just telling you what works for me!

Organix Argan Oil & Shea Butter Shampoo (use whichever sulphate-free shampoo you like)

2) Deep condition – After shampooing, I use a deep conditioner (e.g. Herbal Essences Hello Hydration Intensive Hair Mask, Shea Moisture Deep Treatment Masque, DIY deep conditioners) every week (usually once but if my hair is extremely dry, twice a week). I thoroughly apply the deep conditioner to wet hair and I cover with a shower cap, or if I don’t have one, I use a plastic bag lol. I then wrap my hair with a scarf or towel to provide a warm environment, which improves the effectiveness of the deep conditioner. I leave it on my hair for a minimum of 1 hour (but to be honest, as long as you leave it on for at least 30 minutes, you’ll be fine).

3)  Co-wash – This is shorthand for conditioner wash. Regardless of if I shampoo or deep condition, this is one step I never miss. After washing out the deep conditioner, you simply saturate your hair with your favourite conditioner (e.g. Tresemme Naturals, Organix) and detangle your hair. Try to ensure your conditioner has lots of slip to prevent breakage and to make the detangling process easier. Rinse out the conditioner with cool/cold water (this helps to seal moisture into the strands).
4) Apply leave-in conditioner and seal – Once your hair is clean, apply your favourite leave-in conditioner (e.g. Mixed Chicks, Giovanni Direct Leave-In). You can either apply it to wet or damp hair – I personally apply my leave-in to damp hair (if you’re applying it to damp hair, use a t-shirt to dry your hair – using a towel will suck moisture out and leave your hair frizzy). Seal the moisture in with an oil or butter (e.g. coconut, almond, shea butter) of your choice to ensure the newly added moisture doesn’t evaporate from your strands (I will put up a post about different oils you can use).

Sealants: Coconut oil and raw shea butter

5) Style – Once all this is done, go ahead and style your hair however you please!! This can be a wash and go, a twist out, a braid out, a blow out etc! It’s up to you (but if you’re styling with heat, make sure to use a heat protectant).

Now I know this seems long BUT as you do it over and over, you will perfect your routine and the time it takes will lessen. Again, it’s your hair so you can tweak this routine to suit you.

  • Where do you buy, most of your hair products from ?

  • Hi! It depends where you're based to be honest. In America, I would recommend Target, Duane Reade, CVS, Walgreens and any beauty supply store. In the UK, I buy most of my products online because a lot of them are American brands. I buy them from curlyemporium.co.uk or, if they've run out, I'll buy from Amazon. For the more well-known brands (e.g. Organix, Tresemme, Mixed Chicks), I get them from Boots, Superdrug etc. Also, you're likely to find black hair products in areas such as Peckham and Kilburn in London. I hope this helps!

  • And I forgot to add that curlyemporium.co.uk also does worldwide shipping!

  • Well done Tara! Have you though of doing tutorials(videos) for your braid outs/ twist outs? i think you should do it. i know they're some on youtube but I will like to see YOURS!

  • Hello!! Haha thank you!! It's definitely something I'm planning on doing. Stay tuned to the website and Instagram account. Videos coming soon! xXx

  • Hi tara! I was reading this and it was really helpful but I am a bit confused, you know how you shampoo once a month? what is your regimen for like your once a week wash? do you just deep condition then co-wash? or you co-wash then deep condition?

  • Hi!!
Sorry for the confusion but I'm glad it was helpful lol! So for the weekly regimen, it usually involves deep condition then cowash. However, it really doesn't matter if you deep condition first or if you cowash first. Sometimes I cowash first but most of the time, I DC first. I suggest that you try both and see if one works better for you!
    Hope that helps!

  • Hi! If I DC first, I just rinse my hair beforehand so I'm doing it on wet hair. And when I cowash first, I don't bother to cowash again. Hope that helps!

  • Hello!
Quick question(s), if you DC first are you doing it on dry hair?
Also, if you cowash then DC, do you cowash again afterwards?
