NATURAL HAIR AT WORK

Hey friends!!

I hope you’re all well!! Summer seems to have come to an abrupt end in London with all this rain we’re having *cries*. But I have some exciting news coming up in the next couple of weeks so stay tuned for that!!!

For the past two weeks, I’ve been doing an internship here in London. I’m really enjoying it so far and I’m learning a lot. This inspired me to write a post on how to wear natural hair at work!! One of the major complaints/criticisms I often hear is: natural hair is so unprofessional. But it doesn’t have to be that way!! Who is this entity that decided natural hair was unprofessional??? Isn’t “unprofessional” slightly subjective?? Anyway, here are some tips to help you on your way:

  • Ensure you check your company’s policy on appearance – yeah, I don’t want you getting fired because you wanted to wear your bomb braidout. Most companies will have guidelines on what is acceptable in terms of hair and dress code. Try not to break the rules.
  • Make sure your hairstyle is appropriate for your job – if you work in a factory with loads of machines or something, it’s most likely not the smartest move to wear your hair out or down.
  • Perfect time to protective style – for me, working in a corporate environment is the perfect time to protective style my hair, even if it’s just a simple bun. When I’m working, whether I’m in the office or in uni, I don’t like wearing my hair down simply because it gets in my face. So I usually throw it up into a bun, twists or my favourite wintertime uni hair style, my two pigtails with a beanie.
Skip the scarf if you work in a more corporate environment
  • Keep it neat – unless you have some eccentric job where wild and wonderful hair is encouraged, try to keep your hairstyles neat. This doesn’t mean you can’t wear a wash and go or a flexi rod set. Perhaps just think about using more curl defining products in order to tame frizzies!
  • Try to make your wash day more efficient – if you’re working a standard 9-5 job, you probably don’t want to spend all your time off washing your hair so find ways to save time on your wash day routine e.g. detangling under running water, deep conditioning on the go. Refer to one of my old posts on this topic!
  • Try to do stretched styles – this is fairly similar to the previous point but stretched styles usually require less maintenance than doing a wash and go and they usually last longer meaning that you can go for longer before having to wash your hair again.
  • Keep your hair moisturised – one thing I’ve realised from working is that offices usually have really strong heaters and/or strong air conditioners. If you’re sitting there all day, these things might dry your hair out completely! Trust me, been there (I always have my AC in my room on full blast)! Be sure to keep your hair moisturised in these conditions. I recommend a super moisturising leave in and a good sealant.
There we are, girls and boys!! I hope these tips have helped you with any struggles you may be having when it comes to rocking your natural hair at work.
