HOW TO MAKE DETANGLING YOUR HAIR EASIER

Hi guysssss!

Detangling. Possibly the worst and most time consuming aspect of natural hair! But it’s also one of the most important aspects. Not detangling your hair or not doing it properly can lead to excessive breakage and matted hair. I’ve had situations where I hadn’t detangled properly in a while and I literally had to CUT tangles out. Not cute! So it is really really important to detangle properly. There are so many methods that you reallyyyyy have no excuse not to detangle your hair! I typically stick to finger detangling or using a wide tooth comb on damp hair that is drenched in conditioner but there are so many other options such as using a Tangle Teezer, a Denman brush or even detangling under running water.

So we get it, detangling is kind of annoying. But there are ways to make it easier and way less annoying. Here are a few simple tips to stop you losing your mind:

  • Don’t wait too long between wash days/detangling sessions – one of the greatest way to make your hair super tangled is to leave your hair unwashed for weeks on end. I know we all have times in our lives where we’re super busy and the thought of doing a 5 hour wash day just doesn’t work but sometimes postponing wash day does more harm than good. I’ve been guilty of this many times and, trust me, you will be close to tears!
  • Use the method that works best for you – like I mentioned earlier, there are sooooo many ways to detangle your hair. Everyone’s hair is different so it’s really important that you choose the method that works best for your hair. I finger detangle and I occasionally use a wide tooth comb. Tons of Youtubers I follow use a Tangle Teezer and, despite trying several times, it just doesn’t work well for me at all! It’s very important to do a bit of trial and error and see what works best for you.
  • Make sure you are using the right products – when it comes to detangling your hair, the product you use can make or break your detangling session. I always make sure to use a conditioner with LOTS of slip. When you use one without much slip, you might end up ripping your hair out or breaking strands.
  • Try to keep your hair in stretched or protective styles – I’ve found that it is a LOT easier to detangle your hair when you’ve been wearing it in a stretched style or protective style as opposed to when it’s been in a style such as a wash and go. Styles such as wash and gos cause the strands to get more wound up with each other, thus making the hair more tangled. The difference between detangling when I’ve done a braid out all week and when I’ve had a wash and go is like night and day!
  • Try deep conditioning before your detangle – this might sound weird but it has worked for me for years now. Sometimes, especially when I haven’t washed my hair in a while, my hair feels all brittle and dry and I can tell that detangling it in that state will probably lead to more breakage than is necessary. When I deep condition first (so shampoo then deep conditioner then detangle), I find that the hair is a lot softer and more manageable, making it much easier to detangle.

Of course, there are soooooo many tips out there but I’ve found these to be some of the most effective when it comes to detangling the hair and making the process easier! What other tips do you guys have?

Love,

Tara xXx
