Hello guysss!
Here we are with another hair feature – this time from Temilola!

Tell us your name, where you’re from and where you live

Hey! My name is Temilola. I’m from Nigeria and I live in Nigeria/London.

How long have you been natural? And why did you decide to go natural?
I’ve been natural for 2 years and 10 months. To be honest, I wouldn’t say I made a conscious decision to go natural. I just kind of stopped relaxing my hair out of laziness I think. I got to the point where I just didn’t think I needed it. I was doing weaves all the time and because my hair isn’t very kinky, a straightener was all I needed. But, as soon as I started to see my new growth and curl pattern, I fell in love with it all over again and started taking care of my natural hair the right way.

What’s the best and worst thing about being natural?
Best – probably just how beautiful curly hair actually is – it feels so good to take care of your hair and then be able to run your hands through it knowing it is healthy.
Worst – probably wash day! (I genuinely have to carve out a good chunk of my day if I want to be spot on with my deep conditioning and trimming or whatever it is I’m doing that day) – that and not being able to just jump into bed – my night time routine is so crucial if I want to wake up looking somewhat normal the next day.

Give us a brief summary of your wash day regimen
My wash day regimen is actually quite simple, just time consuming.
Step 1 – I start by just standing under the shower for a good 5 mins (it takes longer than you think for all your hair to be completely soaked when you’re working with a mane)
Step 2 – I put as much shampoo as I can on as much of my scalp as I can and I just give myself a little scalp massage to get the dirt out then let the pressure of the water wash the shampoo down my strands to get them clean. I don’t do this very often, only when I feel like I have a mountain of buildup. I also don’t ‘repeat’ like most shampoo bottles tell you to. Shampoo is not a curly girl’s best friend. (Keep it sulphate free if you can)
Step 3 – I have a couple of ready made deep conditioners if I can’t be bothered to mix up my own and I just SMOTHER my hair in this. I find that adding an oil blend and sectioning my hair really helps to make sure I get every last bit.
Step 4 – I put on a plastic shower cap and my heat cap and go about my business for an hour or so.
Step 5 – Detangle! I used to be a finger detangler but ever since I started using a denman brush, my life has been so much easier. It’s quick and easy and it helps get the conditioner through one last time.
Step 6 – Stand under the shower again (this time with cold water – the worst part of my shower) just to seal in the moisture and get the hair follicles to lay flat.
Step 7 – Leave ins/Oils/Styling – whatever I decide to do that day.

If you were stuck on a desert island and you could only have ONE hair product, what would you choose?
CONDITIONER

Tell us two DOs and two DON’Ts for your natural hair
DOs: Try and deep condition as often as you can. Every week. It’s a lot, it’s stressful but after a few weeks, your hair will thank you.

DON’Ts: brushing or combing your hair when it’s dry. You’ll just split and fray all your ends.

Give us one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to go natural
Know your hair. Don’t go natural expecting your hair to look like someone else’s because you’re doing exactly what they do. Know your hair and what it does and does not like because having unrealistic expectations will drive you crazy. Also remember that it takes FOREVER for curly girls to show length. It’ll feel like your hair isn’t growing but trust me it is.

A big thank you to Temilola for sharing some of her hair secrets with us! More features to come!
