Hey guyssssss!!!
How are you all?? If you’re in London like me, I hope you’re not freezing your butt off like I am. It is SOOO cold omg! But I’m heading back to Lagos soon and I seriously cannot wait *happy dance*. I’m mostly looking forward to the sun, the food and my dogs.
On to something I get asked about a lot: HAIR VITAMINS! Do they work? What are the side effects? Which is the best one? There are so many hair vitamins out there and it can be really tough to figure out which ones are effective. But the general question is: DO THEY ACTUALLY WORK? The answer is pretty annoying: it REALLY depends. It depends on you/your body, the type of vitamins you take and the frequency with which you take them. Some people see NO results with hair vitamins and others see great results.
I’ve tried so many different types of hair vitamins – Hairfinity, Sugar Bear, plain biotin, Solgar Hair, Skin & Nails, Perfectil. Some worked, others literally did nothing. When I had just started my natural hair journey, I took the vitamins to help grow and thicken my hair. Now, when I take them, I take them just for maintenance and to give my hair an extra boost. To be honest I’ve never found that any of these pills increased my length THATTTT much! I’ve only seen increases in thickness and strength. For thickness, Solgar and Hairfinity were the most effective. For strength, plain biotin was the most effective. However, I also know people who have taken Hairfinity and have seen immense growth in terms of length.
A word of caution when it comes to hair vitamins: most of them contain high quantities of biotin and MSM (methylsulfonylmethane). If you don’t drink A LOT of water, they can make you break out like crazy, especially if it’s high in biotin (e.g. Hairfinity). So you really have to watch that. I didn’t have problems with breakouts because I drink a lot of water. If you take something high in MSM (e.g. Solgar), you will definitely have to up your water intake. MSM kinda dries you out and it can lead to dehydration if you’re not drinking more water. For example, I’m currently taking Solgar and I’ve had to increase my water from 3 litres to 3.5-4 litres.
Before taking any hair vitamins, ALWAYS check the ingredients to make sure you’re not allergic to anything. If you are unsure about taking them, ask your doctor. If you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or you have any health problems, definitely consult your doctor before taking anything.
So when it comes to hair vitamins, as I said, it depends! You may have to do some trial and error to figure out what works for you! Hair vitamins can be an effective tool for hair growth but don’t rely solely on them. Just because you’re taking the vitamins, it doesn’t mean you can skip the deep conditioning and moisturising! Just make sure to gulp that H2O.
Have you guys tried any other hair vitamins? Did they work? Let me know below!
Love,
Tara xXx
