FEATURE FRIDAY: MUNIQ

Hello beautiful people!!
So I’ve decided to include features from other naturals. Natural hair is SO diverse and I feel that we can all learn from each other! What may work for person A may not work for person B so it’s important that I give you information from as many sources as possible.
I thought it was only fitting to start these features with the person who inspired me to start wearing my hair out in its natural state instead of straightening it all the time. This is one of my oldest friends, Muniq. Enjoy!

Tell us your name, where you’re from and where you live
My name is Muniq, I’m Nigerian (1/4 British) and I currently live between Lagos and London

How long have you been natural? And why did you decide to go natural?
I’ve been natural my whole life. However, that being said, I have cut my hair to bob length twice, dyed my hair a few times and suffered some heat damage. I am still learning about my hair everyday and trying to take much better care of it.

What’s the best and worst thing about being natural?
Omg where to begin lol! There are sooo many good things and few bad things about being natural, such as the versatility to switch up from curly to straight if you want or shrinkage. To me the BEST thing about being natural is the self-awareness you develop; no one curl/texture in your hair is the same so you have to pay attention and be aware of what works and what doesn’t. The WORST (it’s really not that bad) thing about being natural is your hair looks very touchable to strangers lol.
Give us a brief summary of your wash day regimen
I mostly co-wash (cleans my hair pretty well) either using Herbal Essences Hello Hydration (the blue one)/ Beautiful ends (the red one) or Aussie Colour Mate 3 minute conditioner (I’ve coloured my hair) and shampoo reluctantly twice/thrice a month. I am currently trying out Dark and lovely Au natural moisturising gentle wash, which has been good so far. After shampooing, I drench my hair in my Organix Biotin and Collagen conditioner and section my hair into 4/6 sections to finger detangle (it’s very time consuming but worth it as I have different textures and curl patterns in my hair.) I rinse my hair for about 10-20 seconds so some conditioner is left in my hair. I then use my leave in Moroccanoil intense curl cream and follow it with Moroccan oil/coconut oil.

If you were stuck on a desert island and you could only have ONE hair product, what would you choose?
I would take a jar of organic coconut oil
Tell us two DOs and two DON’Ts for your natural hair
DOs: Lots and lots of coconut oil/argan oil, plaits done old school style (no extensions lol) and detangling my hair once a week at least.

DON’Ts: Dry combing and protective hairstyles left for too long i.e braids break my hair when in for more than 2 weeks and the cotton threads used to do a sew-in weave break my hair drastically!

Give us one piece of advice you would give to someone wanting to go natural
You’re probably going to get it wrong a lot of the time but being natural is pretty much trial and error, what works for someone else may not work for you, so RESEARCH!
A big thank you to Muniq for sharing some of her natural hair tips with us! Stay tuned for more features!
