5 BENEFITS OF HONEY FOR YOUR HAIR & SKIN

Hey guys!!!

How have you been?? I hope you all had a great weekend. I literally spent it braiding my hair, eating and sleeping – standard!

Now, on to one of my favourite products/ingredients: HONEY. Specifically raw honey. According to Swanson Vitamins, “raw honey is honey that is pure, unheated, unpasteurised and unprocessed. This is perhaps one of the most important characteristics and health benefits of the final product, as it preserves all the natural vitamins, enzymes, phytonutrients and other nutritional elements. Raw honey has been used by humans for at least 10,000 years, and has played a vital role in health, healing, religious and cultural traditions”. Honey has sooooo many benefits for our skin, hair and scalp and can be used in so many ways:

Moisturises and softens hair

Honey is a humectant. This means that it’s a product which retains moisture in the hair and draws moisture from the air into your hair. It is extremely moisturising and softening for your strands and can really revive and awaken your hair. Try adding some honey to your deep conditioner or even to your pre-poo and see the huge difference it makes!

Soothes an itchy scalp

If you suffer from a dry and/or itchy scalp, try mixing some honey with your favourite oil (e.g. coconut oil, olive oil, jojoba oil) and apply it to your scalp. Honey has some antibacterial properties that can get rid of any bacteria that may be causing itchiness. Honey can also create a protective barrier on the scalp to prevent infections.

I regularly add honey to my deep conditioners and it makes all the difference

Brightens and moisturises the skin

Applying honey to my face is one of my favourite ways to hydrate and brighten my skin. Don’t underestimate the way in which it can really brighten up dull skin! Whenever I need a quick hydrating and brightening treatment (which is at least once a week with my super dry skin!), I apply raw honey to my clean, dry face for 10-20 minutes and then rinse it off. You can also try mixing your honey with olive oil, green tea or activated charcoal for an extra boost.

It can be used to treat pimples

As previously mentioned, honey has antibacterial and antifungal properties so it can really fight that inflammation and irritation. Applying a little bit of honey to your pimple(s) can really reduce the size, pain and redness of your pimple. Plus you can usually see results pretty quickly so it’s a great quick fix when a random pimple pops up the night before your big event. BONUS: the same way it works for pimples, it also works for cuts/small wounds. Apply it to your cuts/wounds after cleaning it thoroughly. NB: if you actually have a serious cut, don’t just go pouring honey on it. Go to the hospital lol. (I know that’s pretty obvious but hey, I’m not trying to get sued).

Honey cleanses pores

This is super beneficial for your skin and hair/scalp. The enzymes in honey can clarify your pores, keeping them clean and clear. This will rid your skin of pimple-causing bacteria and help tighten those pores, helping you maintain clear skin. Similarly, honey will also help clear the scalp of build up whilst nourishing it, promoting hair growth and keeping your hair/scalp healthy.

So where can you get raw honey?? Well if you live anywhere like Nigeria, Ghana etc etc, it will probably be very easy to find raw honey at a very low price! In my house, we buy these big bottles of honey (everyone in my house is obsessed with honey for some reason) and then we just refill the honey jar from those big bottles. However, if you’re in the UK, the US etc, raw honey may cost you a little extra. You can get it at any health shop or large supermarket (e.g. Holland and Barrett, Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s etc). When I was living in London, my fave raw honey was Hilltop Honey – it was so delicious and really good for my hair/skin. Yes it does cost more than normal honey but it is SO worth it.

That’s it folks! If you haven’t tried honey on your hair and skin, you really should! It is one of the most nourishing and powerful products you can use. If you need an extra boost in any of your hair products, give honey a go! Let me know how it goes.

Love,

Tara xXx
